FEB 12 (V7N) - Unofficial results announced Thursday show Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Masud Saidi (Scales symbol) securing victory in Jhalakathi.
According to local counts, Saidi received 33,774 votes in 29 centres of Jhalakathi’s Jhalakathi upazila, while his nearest rival, BNP’s Principal Alamgir Hossain (Sheaf of Paddy symbol), obtained 12,413 votes. In the sadar and municipal areas, results from 66 centres gave Saidi 21,433 votes against Alamgir’s 14,285.
Overall, Alamgir Hossain recorded 101,355 votes, while Saidi’s total stood significantly higher, ensuring his win by a wide margin.
Masud Saidi, son of former Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Saidi, had pledged to continue his father’s unfinished work. He told voters before the election: “My father delivered development plans to households in book form. I will follow the same path if Allah accepts me as your servant.”
The constituency has a history of Jamaat victories, with Delwar Hossain Saidi winning here in 1996 and 2001.
