Dhaka, Oct 09 (V7N): Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, Senior Joint Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), urged the interim government on Wednesday to expedite the process of holding general elections to restore genuine democratic practices in the country. He made this statement while distributing leaflets in the Pallabi area of Dhaka to raise awareness about preventing dengue.
Rizvi expressed concern about the current political situation, stating, "There is a reluctance in some areas, but it can no longer be tolerated. If anyone intends to act otherwise, I want to emphasize that we have not bid farewell to our movement. You will hear the whimper of the storm of our resistance."
He added, "If you do not rectify your approach and continue to conceal reforms and elections, the interim government will face the sound of the storm of resistance. Thus, it is imperative to arrange elections promptly to restore politics to its rightful democratic course."
Rizvi further stated that the BNP, along with like-minded parties and citizens from all walks of life, supports the interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus. He warned that if this government fails, both democracy and the public will suffer, asserting that the people do not wish to see the return of individuals like Sheikh Hasina.
He emphasized the BNP's long-standing commitment to the fight for democracy over the past 16 to 17 years, highlighting that many party leaders and activists have suffered enforced disappearances and violence under the previous government. "Sheikh Hasina's regime has crippled many BNP supporters, leaving them blind and injured," he claimed.
Rizvi criticized what he described as biased treatment toward the BNP, noting that the public is eager to exercise their voting rights. "We want the interim government to succeed, but if elections are delayed under the guise of success or reform, the people will become skeptical," he concluded.
Present at the event were BNP Health Affairs Secretary Dr. Rafiqul Islam, central leaders Nazim Uddin Alam and Saiful Alam Nirob, former Member Secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP Aminul Haque, National Executive Committee Member Tabith Awal, and Jubo Dal leaders SM Jahangir and Mehbub Masum Shanto.
