Dhaka, Jan 21 (V7N) — BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged for patience during the ongoing critical political climate, emphasising the need for elections only after implementing minimum reforms. He made these remarks as the chief guest at a discussion meeting organised by the Zia Memorial Library at the National Press Club on Tuesday afternoon, marking the 89th birth anniversary of the late President Ziaur Rahman and the organisation's 12th founding anniversary.
Mirza Fakhrul reiterated the BNP’s stance on reforms before elections, stating, "We want elections after minimum reforms. An elected government is always more acceptable than an unelected one."
Acknowledging the unrest in the country, he called on everyone to remain calm and avoid actions that might lead to chaos. "People are taking to the streets every day with demands. However, nothing rash should be done. Ultra-revolutionary thinking or creating unrest will only worsen the situation," he added.
The BNP leader also highlighted the need for a gradual approach to political and structural reforms, saying, "The state has not developed as we envisioned. Mistakes have been made, and the country faces numerous challenges. While change won’t come overnight, I am hopeful that the proposed reforms will pave the way for a better future."
Mirza Fakhrul expressed optimism about ongoing reform discussions, noting, "The chief advisor is expected to consult all parties and make decisions that reflect the people's aspirations. Our goal is to move toward a democratic structure that allows the country to progress."
He concluded by reaffirming the BNP’s demand for elections post-reform, stating, "We do not want immediate elections. Elections should only be held after ensuring minimum reforms to uphold the people's mandate and democratic integrity."
The BNP continues to advocate for reforms as a precondition to elections, seeking to address concerns over governance and the current political instability in the country.
