Dhaka, Feb 26 (V7N)- A new student organization, the Bangladesh Democratic Students' Union, has been officially launched by former coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement. The announcement was made during a press conference at Dhaka University's Madhur Canteen on Wednesday.

The central convener of the new organization is Abu Baker Majumder, a 2019-20 academic year student of Dhaka University. He was a frontline coordinator of the student movement against discrimination during the student-public uprising. Previously, he served as the member secretary of the Democratic Student Power’s Dhaka University branch before its activities were suspended.

Who’s Joining?

The Democratic Students' Union brings together former leaders of several student groups, including:

  • Democratic Chhatra Shakti
  • Chhatra Odhikar Parishad
  • Former Chhatra League members who resigned during the Chhatra-Janata movement
  • Some former members of Islami Chhatra Shibir

Reports suggest that Zahid Ahsan, a 2018-19 academic year student of Dhaka University, is expected to be named the member secretary of the new organization. Ahsan currently serves as the secretary of the central office cell of the anti-discrimination student movement and was previously the office secretary of the Student Rights Council’s Dhaka University branch.

The launch of this student organization comes just one day before the anticipated debut of a new political party formed by students who led the July coup. The rapid formation of new student and political groups signals shifting dynamics within the country’s student politics.
