Dhaka, Mar 04 (V7N) – The National Citizens Party (NCP) has declared that the 24th uprising was not just about changing the government but about fundamentally reshaping the country’s governance. Nahid Islam, the party’s convener, emphasized the necessity of drafting a new constitution and building a new republic to ensure true freedom for the people.
The remarks came on Tuesday morning as NCP leaders and activists paid tribute at the National Memorial, marking their first official program since the party’s establishment. Nahid Islam stated that even after the Liberation War of 1971, the people have yet to achieve genuine freedom. "For this reason, we need a second republic," he asserted.
Nahid Islam highlighted the need to abolish the old administrative structure to prevent election delays and political instability. He stressed that a Constituent Assembly election must be held first, allowing the elected representatives to draft a new constitution.
“The Citizens Party will work to fulfill the aspirations of all democratic movements, including those of the Liberation War,” he added.
Meanwhile, Akhtar Hossain, the party’s member secretary, reinforced the demand for a Constituent Assembly election, stating that only after its formation should parliamentary elections take place.
Nahid Islam also called for Awami League’s political issues to be addressed through the judicial system, signaling a legal approach to political restructuring.
He reassured supporters that the NCP is swiftly working to meet registration requirements and is in the process of drafting its proposed constitution.
Other prominent NCP leaders, including chief organizer Sarjis Alam, Hasnat Abdullah, chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari, and senior joint chief coordinator Hannan Masud, were also present at the event.
As the party takes its initial steps, its call for systemic change and a new governance model is likely to spark significant political discourse in the country.
