DHAKA, July 5 (V7N) – The opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) issued a stern warning on Friday, declaring that anyone engaging in unethical or violent behavior under the party’s name will face swift and strict disciplinary action.
The statement came during an emergency press briefing held at the BNP’s central office in Naya Paltan, where Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, the party’s Senior Joint Secretary General, emphasized that the leadership would not tolerate criminal activities or misconduct from any member, regardless of rank or affiliation.
“We want to state unequivocally: anyone using the party’s name to engage in unlawful, unethical, violent, or terrorist acts will not be spared,” Rizvi said. “We will investigate such incidents immediately, review video and audio evidence, and take decisive action if anyone is found responsible.”
He added that this policy is already being implemented and reiterated the message through the media to deter further incidents. “Let this be a warning so that no one dares again. Whether it's internal disputes or altercations with outsiders, any form of violence or terrorism will be met with serious consequences.”
According to Rizvi, the BNP has already taken disciplinary action against 4,000 to 5,000 leaders and activists across the country. In the last 24 hours alone, the party has responded to incidents in multiple districts.
In Kurigram’s Chilmari upazila, a torch procession turned violent during a local committee formation, resulting in vandalism and internal clashes. Following an immediate inquiry, two local leaders—Saeed Hossain Pakhi (Joint Convener) and Abdul Motin Shirin (Member)—were expelled from all party positions, including their primary memberships.
Similar action was taken in Comilla South district, where Pachthubi Union’s general secretary Khokon Mia was expelled for alleged involvement in armed violence under the party’s banner.
The crackdown extended to Bhola’s Tajumuddin upazila, where local leader Ibrahim Hawlader, general secretary of Chanchra Union, was expelled after reportedly assaulting a female leader of the BNP-affiliated women's wing with a group of accomplices.
In another serious incident in Patgram, a group identifying themselves as BNP supporters allegedly stormed a local police station and forcibly freed two individuals. Rizvi stated that a formal investigation is underway and warned of exemplary punishment once those responsible are identified.
In the capital, Dhaka, allegations emerged that on Wednesday night a group led by Banani Thana unit Jubo Dal (BNP’s youth wing) convener Munir Hossain stormed into a restaurant—Zakaria Hotel—and assaulted several women. Photos of the incident were widely circulated on online news platforms. According to Rizvi, the Jubo Dal leadership immediately expelled Munir upon confirmation of his involvement.
Party Joint Secretaries General Khairul Kabir Khokon and Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel were present at the press briefing.
The BNP leadership’s message is clear: the party seeks to distance itself from disorderly elements and is determined to uphold internal discipline amid rising political tension and public scrutiny.
