BNP Vice Chairman and former minister Major (retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed was remanded to jail by a Dhaka court on Tuesday in connection with a case related to vandalism at Gulshan police station.
Major Hafiz, who recently returned home after undergoing knee surgery in Delhi, India, surrendered to the court on Tuesday and applied for bail. However, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury denied the bail plea and ordered his detention.
This development follows a previous sentencing of Major Hafiz to 21 months in prison by the same court on December 28, 2023.
The case dates back to June 4, 2011, when the accused allegedly attacked and obstructed police work on a road in Mohakhali under Gulshan police station. They were accused of vandalizing and setting fire to passing cars.
Following an investigation, charges were filed against the accused by Gulshan police station Sub-Inspector Kamrul Hasan Talukdar on April 29, 2014. Subsequently, on April 25, 2022, charges were framed against the accused.
