Dhaka, Apr 15 (V7N) – Professor Ali Riaz, Vice-Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, has stated that a national charter can be formulated by building consensus on common grounds and setting aside differences through dialogue. He emphasized that such a charter could serve as a foundation for the state reforms the nation aspires to achieve.
He made the remarks during a discussion session with the National Democratic Movement (NDM), held at the LD Hall of the National Parliament on Tuesday (April 15).
“Our main objective is to reach a national charter as soon as possible,” said Professor Riaz. “The term of the Commission runs until mid-July. We hope to complete the initial round of discussions by mid-May, after which we’ll proceed to the next stage.”
He noted that the dialogue phase has formally commenced, with the first round of talks underway. “We may need several phases of discussion. The goal is to identify common ground that all parties can agree on,” he added.
The meeting was attended by a delegation of eight NDM representatives, led by NDM Chairman Bobby Hajjaj.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Bobby Hajjaj expressed his party’s alignment with many of the commission’s proposals. “NDM supports most of the suggestions made by the National Consensus Commission. We want to see reforms on a broader scale,” he said.
The Commission, which aims to gather input from political parties, civil society, and stakeholders, is working to draft a comprehensive national consensus framework to guide future political and structural reforms in Bangladesh.
