Lalmonirhat, Jan 29 (V7N) — Mufti Syed Rezaul Karim of Islami Andolan Bangladesh has alleged that Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman took a selfie while sitting next to veiled women, calling the act inappropriate for an Islamic political movement.

Rezaul Karim made the remarks on Thursday afternoon while serving as the chief guest at a Jamaat election rally in Hatibandha Upazila of Lalmonirhat, ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.

“We did not say, ‘boys, move away, girls, now you come.’ Yet the older man sits next to the girls and takes a selfie with veiled women. This is not something the Islamic movement can do,” he said.

He also highlighted his own party’s efforts in protecting minorities and assisting communities during crises, including during the anarchy after August 5 and the COVID-19 pandemic. “Even during COVID-19, we took risks to arrange funerals and burials, serving people in difficult times,” Rezaul Karim said.

The comments are part of rising tensions and political criticism among Islamic parties in the lead-up to the 13th national parliamentary elections.
