The eleven freshly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) of the Jatiya Party have taken the oath of office.

On Wednesday, January 10, after 12 p.m., Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury administered the oath on the ground level of the parliament building.

The Speaker had earlier taken her oath as a member of Parliament and signed the oath book at 10:12 a.m.

The morning of the election, the MP-elect began to arrive at Parliament.

The Awami League was able to form the government for a fourth straight term after winning an absolute majority in the general election held on January 7. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League won 222 seats, while independent candidates prevailed in 62 constituencies.

Only 11 seats were won by the main opposition Jatiya Party, while one seat each was won by the Workers Party, Jasad, and Bangladesh Kalyan Party.

The passing of an independent candidate resulted in the postponement of the Naogaon-2 poll. We now have a new date of February 12. Due to conflicts, the EC also postponed the results in the Mymensingh-3 constituency.

The Jatiya Party then withdrew its previous statement that its incoming MPs would not be taking the oath of office on Wednesday. Given the number of seats won by independent candidates, there are doubts regarding its ability to remain the opposition in Parliament.

However, Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader stated that since his party received the second-highest number of seats in the upcoming Parliament, they would serve as the opposition.
