Dhaka June 9,(V7N)- Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) unequivocally rejected the proposed national budget for the fiscal year 2024-2025, decrying it as a ploy to exploit the impoverished and legitimize the plundering of a select few.
At a press conference held at the party's Gulshan office, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir lambasted the budget, asserting its impracticality and detrimental impact on the nation.
Labeling the budget as a mere facade, Fakhrul contended that it caters solely to the interests of a privileged elite, perpetuating a cycle of theft and corruption. He lamented the dire economic situation, likening the budget to a flickering lantern atop a shaky economic foundation.
In a scathing critique, Fakhrul denounced the budget's focus on mega projects and widespread corruption, emphasizing its burden on the common people. He criticized the reliance on debt and deficit financing, warning of its adverse consequences on the economy and public welfare.
Expressing concern over the depletion of national assets and the exodus of funds abroad, Fakhrul accused the government of facilitating the looting of the country's resources. He condemned the proposed tax hikes and increased borrowing, arguing that they disproportionately burden the populace.
Amidst rampant inflation and economic distress, Fakhrul underscored the budget's failure to address essential sectors like education, health, and agriculture. He criticized the reduction in allocations for these crucial areas, highlighting their importance for economic stability.
Fakhrul lamented the absence of measures to stimulate job creation and alleviate unemployment, particularly in light of the looming closure of factories and mills. He decried the lack of direction on macroeconomic indicators and inflation reduction, asserting the budget's anti-people stance.
Moreover, Fakhrul condemned the government's decision to raise tariffs on mobile phone calls, internet services, and import duties on laptops. He denounced the provision for whitening black money, characterizing it as a license for corruption.
In conclusion, Fakhrul called for the restoration of democracy and good governance, emphasizing the need for free and fair elections. He underscored the urgency of protecting the country from the grip of corrupt elements and establishing a responsible government.
The press conference, attended by BNP standing committee members Mirza Abbas and Nazrul Islam Khan, underscored the party's staunch opposition to the proposed budget and its commitment to safeguarding the interests of the people.
