Dhaka, August 19 — Former Minister of Social Welfare, Dipu Moni, was arrested by a team from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's intelligence department on Monday evening. The arrest took place in the Baridhara DOHS area of the capital.

A senior official from the Detective Branch (DB) of the police confirmed the arrest, stating that Dipu Moni is being taken to the DB office on Minto Road for further questioning. However, the specific charges or case under which she is being detained have not yet been disclosed.

The arrest comes in the wake of an attack on the house of Sheikh Farid Ahmed Manik, the Chandpur district BNP president, during the anti-discrimination student movement on July 18. The attack involved vandalism, looting, and arson, and a case was filed on August 15 by Razzaq Howladar, the joint convener of the Chandpur Municipal Juba Dal and resident of the city's Bagadi Road. The case named 1,200 people, including JR Wadud Tipu.

Dipu Moni, who is the Joint General Secretary of the Awami League, has previously served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Education. Her arrest marks a significant development in the ongoing political tensions in the country.
