Dhaka, Aug 24 (V7N) — Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday urged the interim government to provide a clear roadmap for holding national elections as soon as possible, following necessary reforms and through consultations with political parties.

Speaking at a discussion organized by Bhasani Anusari Parishad at the Jatiya Press Club to mark the ninth death anniversary of former Prime Minister Kazi Zafar Ahmed, who passed away on August 27, 2015, Fakhrul expressed dissatisfaction with the interim government's lack of meaningful dialogue with political parties and failure to implement visible changes, particularly within the bureaucracy.

“We have high expectations from the interim government and believe they will hold the election within a reasonable timeframe,” Fakhrul stated. He underscored the importance of elections, asserting that the authority to govern must come from an elected parliament. “There is no alternative to this.”

Fakhrul expressed skepticism about the ability of certain members of the current interim government to implement necessary state reforms, emphasizing that such changes must involve active public participation. He called for more tangible government action on both reforms and the election process.

“We want the Chief Adviser to promptly present a roadmap to the public, clearly outlining how the elections will be organized, how the necessary reforms will be implemented, and how these steps will benefit the people,” he said.

Fakhrul also criticized the continued presence of former government secretaries in their positions, who he claims were involved in misconduct. “We want individuals who are genuinely pro-people to be part of the interim government,” he said.

He noted a lack of substantive, agenda-based discussions between the interim government and political parties, stating that the opinions of political parties need to be considered. “The advisers are in pivotal positions where future politics will be shaped, so they must engage in dialogue with political stakeholders,” Fakhrul added.
