Dhaka, Aug 28 (V7N): BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emphasized on Wednesday that both the general public and the business community are calling for a democratic system and an elected government in Bangladesh.
During a press conference at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office, Fakhrul reiterated his call for the interim government to engage in talks with political parties to establish a reasonable timeframe for its tenure to avoid misunderstandings.
“People want to see a democratic system in place. They desire democracy and elections. They are content when elections occur and accept the results of a free and fair election. We must keep these desires in mind,” Fakhrul said.
He highlighted that the majority of people believe that elections are urgently needed.
“The major business leaders in Bangladesh also believe that an elected government is crucial for their enterprises, industrial growth, and the smooth operation of the economy. They are advocating for this change as soon as possible.”
Fakhrul noted that many businessmen feel discouraged from fully engaging in business activities, such as import and export, without an elected government.
“This is the current situation. You (journalists) can verify this by speaking with business leaders,” he added.
Fakhrul also addressed the impracticality of expecting a few individuals to transform the country into a paradise. “The people will decide how the country should be governed,” he said.
He reminded that BNP supports state reforms and had presented a 31-point outline over a year ago aimed at reforming the constitution and state system to ensure economic prosperity.
Fakhrul expressed the party’s willingness to offer a reasonable timeframe and full cooperation to the interim government established through a mass upsurge, provided that the government is on the right path. “We will continue to support this as long as we believe the government is making progress.”
When questioned about the appropriate timeframe for the interim government, Fakhrul stated that it should be determined through discussions.
“We need to find a resolution through mutual discussions, addressing our needs, their needs, and what the people want. The current government must engage in talks with political parties soon. I have emphasized this before and reiterate that discussions should be held promptly to prevent misunderstandings,” he concluded.
