Bagerhat, Sep 08 (V7N) - In Chingrakhali Union of Morelganj, Bagerhat, a violent incident occurred late at night involving an attack on a Chhatra Dal office, arson, and looting of an electronics store. On Saturday afternoon, Additional Superintendent of Police for Morelganj Circle, SM Ashikur Rahman, and the local police chief, Mohammad Shamsuddin, visited the scene. The atmosphere in the area remains tense following the incident.
Witnesses and local traders reported that around 12:45 a.m. Friday night, a group of 10-12 armed individuals subdued two local night watchmen, Abbas Sheikh (40) and Moti Shikdar (70), and broke into the Chhatra Dal office. They vandalized office furniture and set fire to photographs of President Ziaur Rahman, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, and BNP's acting chairman Tarique Rahman. The attackers then proceeded to loot the electronics store of student leader Naeem Khan, stealing batteries, TVs, and other electronic items, causing damage estimated at around 12 lakh taka, according to the store owner’s uncle, Md. Shahin Shikdar.
Local residents and traders have protested the incident and are calling for a thorough investigation and justice from the authorities.
Abdus Sobahan Howlader, President of Chingrakhali Union BNP, mentioned that an announcement about the fire was made through the mosque loudspeaker. Upon arriving in the morning, he discovered that the Chhatra Dal office had been set on fire and Naeem Khan’s store had been looted. He alleged that the attack was a retaliatory move by some ruling party activists in response to a local murder case. The BNP intends to file a complaint with the police regarding the attack.
Market traders Shahin Shikdar, Abbas Sardar, Shahjahan Khan, Mamun Sheikh, and Abdus Salam Box Khoka, among others, reported that following the murder of Badal Box’s elder brother, Babul Box, on August 5 by terrorists, a murder case was filed at Morelganj Police Station. They claimed that innocent individuals, including student leader Naeem Khan, were wrongfully implicated in the case without identifying the real culprits. They allege that Naeem’s store was targeted and looted for goods worth around 10 lakh taka during his absence. They are demanding justice.
Morelganj Police Chief Mohammad Shamsuddin confirmed that he, along with Assistant Superintendent of Police SM Ashikur Rahman, visited the scene in the afternoon. The situation is currently calm, but no formal complaints have been lodged yet. Legal action will be taken once complaints are received.
