On Thursday, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi voiced worry over the tremendous insecurity that Bangladeshi residents are experiencing along the Myanmar border, where gunshots and mortar bombs are killing and injuring people.
During a news conference held at the party's central headquarters in Nayapaltan, he also held the government responsible for the death of a Bangladeshi national who was hit by a mortar shell launched by Myanmar.
Bangladesh is encouraged to look into atrocity crimes committed by recently arriving Myanmar Border Guards.
"Along the border within Bangladesh, no man or woman is safe. Following mortar shell strikes, people are losing their lives. We want to see necessary efforts and activities to ensure the security of the country and its people and make the sovereignty stronger,” the BNP leader said.
He questioned why a mortar round launched by another nation murdered a Bangladeshi woman. "Where do I go to respond to this occurrence appropriately? Since the administration is a weak one with little popular backing, it is unable to even file a formal protest."
According to Rizvi, since the Awami League administration has remained in power via reliance on the state machinery, it is powerless to defuse tensions along the border. "They terrorize the people of the country with guns, but they fear their (foreign) masters."
For about two weeks, there has been intense shooting, gunfire, and skirmishes between the armed forces of the military junta and rebel groups inside Myanmar along the border between Bandarban's Naikhongchhari Ghumdhum and Tumbru.
As of Wednesday midday, more than 300 border guards and soldiers from Myanmar have sought refuge in Bangladesh due to border skirmishes.
In the meantime, on Monday, a mortar shell fired from the Myanmar side fell on a kitchen in Jalpaitli village of Ghumdhum union in Naikhongchhari upazila of Bandarban, killing two people: a Rohingya man and a Bangladeshi Woman.
According to Rizvi, bloodshed has occurred in Bangladesh's border regions, leaving the lives and land of the country's citizens exposed. "People from the neighboring nation are coming into Bangladesh in groups. Yet, the government of Bangladesh remains mute. Even in cases where a BGB member is killed in a BSF firing, the government is afraid to voice their objections.
He claimed that the nation's sovereignty is currently under jeopardy because of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's appeal for moderation and peacekeeping. "Our border guards are retreating as a result, endangering the people of Bangladesh every day."
According to Rizvi, people were protected and the border territories of Bangladesh were secure under the administrations of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia.
He claimed that on January 7, Awami once more grabbed power through a charade of an election that was rejected by 95% of the populace. "Only the fake government's prime minister and her allies spoke to the January 7 election as free and fair. However, it was the century's worst joke.
