Dhaka, Nov 28 (V7N) — Thousands of families in the Karail slum remain homeless and destitute three days after a devastating fire reduced more than 1,500 houses and shops to ashes. The affected residents, who previously survived on limited means, are now spending their days and nights under the open sky, surrounded by the charred remnants of their former homes.

Slum dwellers continue to sift through the ash-covered debris, desperately searching for anything that might help them survive — a piece of metal, half-burnt clothing, or any remnants of their belongings. Many families say they have been left with nothing but the sky above and the burnt ruins before them.

Children who spent nights exposed to the cold and smoke are already falling sick, residents said.

Although some non-governmental organizations and political leaders have provided food and clothing, the victims claim the assistance is far from enough. Many allege that the aid distribution is not reaching everyone equally.

A local resident said, “If those who are helping could distribute the relief properly among all of us, then we would benefit more. Many people are still without basic support.”

Authorities are yet to announce a comprehensive rehabilitation plan, leaving thousands uncertain about when — or if — they will be able to rebuild their homes and lives.
