Chattogram, Apr 23 (V7N) — Two workers were killed and two others injured after a sewerage excavation site collapsed during construction work in the city early Thursday morning.

Victims identified

The deceased have been identified as Rakib and Tushar.

Accident during WASA project work

According to the Fire Service, a contractor company, Chinese Hydro Company, was carrying out sewerage pipeline installation work for the Chittagong WASA in areas including Agrabad Access Road.

During excavation work:

  • A newly dug hole suddenly collapsed

  • Four workers were trapped underground

  • Fire Service units rescued them after about one hour with the help of locals

The injured were rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared two of them dead.

Injured under treatment

The remaining two workers are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

Violence at hospital

Following delays in treatment, angry workers allegedly vandalized the emergency department of the hospital. Police intervened and arrested eight individuals in connection with the incident.

Investigation expected

Authorities are expected to investigate both the worksite safety failure and the subsequent unrest at the hospital, as concerns grow over construction safety standards in urban infrastructure projects.
