CHATTOGRAM, May 28, (V7N) – A fire that broke out in the engine room of the commercial oil tanker MT Meghna Traders at the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port has been successfully brought under control after nearly four hours of intense firefighting efforts.

The blaze ignited around 7:30 am Thursday at Charlie Point, near Parky Beach. Crews were immediately evacuated, and carbon dioxide was sprayed to suppress the flames. By 11:30 am, the fire was extinguished, according to the Chattogram Port Authority.

Port tugboats Kandari-3 and Kandari-11, Bangladesh Navy tug BNT Sevak, and Coast Guard tug Pramatta joined the operation. The Coast Guard also deployed ship Shyamal Bangla along with firefighting and rescue teams.

All 22 crew members were safely rescued, and no casualties have been reported.

Md. Nasir Uddin, Chief Personnel Officer of Chattogram Port, confirmed that the vessel had arrived on May 26 carrying RBD soybeans from Indonesia. He said the port authority, Coast Guard, Navy, and the ship’s local agent USL are jointly monitoring the situation.

This incident highlights the importance of coordinated emergency response among port authorities, the Navy, and Coast Guard in ensuring maritime safety and protecting vital trade routes.
