Rajshahi, Jan 16 (V7N): Farmers in Puthia, Rajshahi, have raised concerns about being charged extra rent for onion seedlings at Baneshwar Haat. Ruhul Amin, a farmer from the Tarapur area of Puthia, reported that after purchasing 25 kg of onion seedlings, he was charged 100 taka as rent, although the rent receipt stated only 100 taka. According to him, the actual charge was higher, ranging from 100 to 200 taka per maund, depending on the quality of the seedlings, which cost between 900 and 1,200 taka per maund.

Ruhul Amin, who previously cultivated onions on 2 bighas of land, mentioned that due to the higher costs and poor seedling quality, he is now cultivating them on just 1 bigha this season.

Baneshwar Haat, a major market in the Puthia Upazila, known for its onion production, has seen a reduction in seedling prices compared to last season. Despite this, both buyers and sellers, including Ruhul Amin, have reported the collection of extra rent at the market. Ashraful Islam, a seller from Vallukgachi Chowk-Domadi village, also complained about the additional charges, despite the lower prices of the seedlings this season.

Another seller, Mukul Hossain from Chak Dhadash village, noted that onion seedlings, which previously cost between 65 to 80 taka per kg, are now being sold for 25 to 40 taka per kg, yet the extra rent continues to be collected.

The lessee of Baneshwar Hat, Jahangir Alam, claimed to be unaware of the extra rent charges and assured that action would be taken if necessary. Matiur Rahman Moti, Acting President of the Baneshwar Hat Bazaar Traders Association, stated that no written complaints had been received about the issue and mentioned that he was unavailable for further discussion due to health reasons.
