Habiganj, Apr 26 (V7N)- Hundreds of farmers in Madhabpur Upazila have achieved success in cultivating new varieties of rice developed by the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI). These varieties, BRRI Dhan 102 and BRRI Dhan 104, have garnered significant interest among local farmers due to their high yields and low cultivation costs.

On Saturday afternoon, scientific officials from the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute visited the Gopinathpur field in the upazila to participate in the rice harvesting alongside the local farmers.

Farmer Abdul Basit Badhu Mia stated that, following the guidance of BRRI, Gazipur, 100 farmers cultivated BRRI Dhan 102 and BRRI Dhan 104 in the Gopinathpur field. He reported that these new varieties produced bumper yields while requiring relatively lower cultivation costs compared to other rice varieties.

Dr. Hirendra Nath Barman, Chief Scientific Officer of the Habiganj Nagura Rice Research Institute, highlighted the increasing demand for rice in Bangladesh amidst decreasing cultivable land. He emphasized BRRI's ongoing research to develop high-yielding rice varieties and their direct distribution to farmers for cultivation. He noted the successful cultivation of these new varieties by hundreds of farmers in Gopinathpur and other areas.

Dr. Priyolal, Senior Scientific Officer of Hybrid Rice, mentioned the growing interest among farmers in cultivating high-yielding rice to maximize production on smaller land areas. He also pointed out that these particular rice varieties require pesticide application within tolerable limits.

The rice harvesting festival in the crop fields of hundreds of farmers was attended by several individuals, including Scientific Officer Mustafa Bin Afzal, former president of Madhabpur Press Club Ala Uddin Al Roni, and former municipal councilor Golap Khan.
