Dhaka, Nov 03 (V7N)- The search committee responsible for nominating candidates for the chief election commissioner (CEC) and five election commissioner roles held its initial meeting on Sunday afternoon. Headed by Appellate Division's Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, the committee convened in the chief justice's conference room.

Speaking to reporters, the cabinet secretary noted that updates would be shared once the committee concludes its discussions and a decision is reached.

Formed by the interim government on October 29, this six-member committee marks a key step toward restructuring Bangladesh’s electoral framework. Members include Justice AKM Asaduzzaman of the High Court Division, Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Nurul Islam, Bangladesh Public Service Commission Chairman Mobasser Momen, CR Abrar, Executive Director of the Refugee and Migratory Movement Research Unit, and Prof. Zeenatun Nesa Tahmida Begum, former Dhaka University academic and ex-PSC chairman.

Under current law, the committee must submit a shortlist of 10 names to the president within 15 working days. The president will then appoint one chief election commissioner and four other commissioners to form the Election Commission.

The positions became vacant after Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal and four commissioners resigned on September 5, following a mass uprising that led to the departure of Sheikh Hasina’s government.
