Dhaka, Nov 17 (V7N)- The interim government has extended the executive magistrate powers for commissioned officers of the armed forces (Army, Navy, and Air Force) for an additional 60 days. This was confirmed through a notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration on Saturday.
The notification, dated November 15, stated that commissioned officers holding the rank of captain or above in the Bangladesh Army, as well as equivalent ranks in the Navy and Air Force, will continue to exercise these powers across the country.
These magisterial powers are conferred under several sections of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) of 1898, including sections 64, 65, 83, 84, 86, 95(2), 100, 105, 107, 109, 110, 126, 127, 128, 130, 133, and 142.
The extension follows an earlier order issued on September 17, granting magisterial powers to army officers to address law and order issues. On September 30, these powers were expanded to include officers from the Navy and Air Force.
The move underscores the government’s reliance on the armed forces to maintain stability during the current transitional period. Observers note that such measures aim to ensure law and order but also highlight the critical role of the military in governance during this phase.
This decision has drawn significant attention, with discussions focusing on its implications for civilian administration and governance in Bangladesh.
