Dhaka, Nov 25 (V7N)— The newly appointed Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali, has issued a stern warning against extortion, vowing strict action against any offenders, including police personnel. He made these remarks during a meeting with autorickshaw, autovan, and easybike drivers at the DMP headquarters on Monday.
During the meeting, a rickshaw driver shared an incident of assault in the Kamrangirchar area, prompting the commissioner to respond decisively. "Why did you not file a case?" he asked. "If actionable, the OC (Officer-in-Charge) must take the case. If the case is not accepted, the OC of that police station will be suspended within one minute."
Commissioner Sajjat Ali emphasized the importance of protecting the hard-earned money of the poor, stating, "There will be no extortion from rickshaw-vans. If any policeman is found involved in extortion, they will face consequences. We will not let anyone exploit the earnings of the hardworking poor."
Addressing the movement of battery-operated rickshaws in the capital, he assured the drivers that the matter was under review and would be discussed in the chamber court in the afternoon. "You have to wait until the court makes a decision," he said.
The meeting, held at 11:00 am, saw two rickshaw drivers' organizations presenting their concerns and demands to the DMP commissioner. The discussions highlighted the struggles faced by the drivers, including safety issues and extortion.
This meeting reflects the commissioner’s commitment to addressing the grievances of the city's marginalized workers and ensuring accountability within the police force.
