Dhaka, Dec 21 (V7N)  — Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali has raised concerns about the rapidly increasing number of autorickshaws in the city, warning that if immediate measures are not taken, the traffic situation will worsen significantly. Speaking at a public meeting at the Institution of Diploma Engineers in Kakrail on Saturday afternoon, he emphasised the urgency of controlling autorickshaws to prevent further congestion.

“The number of autorickshaws is increasing rapidly. They have no license, no tax. Autorickshaws should be brought in limited numbers and under proper regulation,” said the Commissioner.

Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali highlighted that the rising number of unregulated autorickshaws, combined with extortion, is affecting the cost of daily necessities, placing additional pressure on the lower and middle classes. He revealed that a list of extortionists is being prepared and assured the public that arrests will begin within two to three days.

Regarding sidewalk hawkers, he stated, “It is inhumane to completely evict hawkers, but pedestrian access must be ensured. Only 7 percent of the city’s roads are available for public use, far below the 25 percent needed for a population of this size.”

The Commissioner also addressed the risks posed by motorcycles, calling them “risky vehicles” and suggesting restrictions on their use as family transportation. He announced plans to enforce stricter discipline on the roads, with no tolerance for traffic violations. Recommendations for changes to road laws, including measures to combat noise pollution, will be submitted soon.

Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali also commented on the recent Tablighi Jamaat clash that claimed three lives. “We also have to face a big problem with the Tablighi Jamaat. Three people lost their lives. Who will take responsibility for this? We don’t think there is any room for this in Islam,” he remarked, urging for better conflict resolution.

The DMP Commissioner’s address signals a renewed focus on tackling Dhaka’s traffic issues, ensuring public safety, and addressing social challenges through coordinated efforts.
