Dhaka, Jan 10 (V7N) — Former Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank, AFM Shahinul Islam, has been appointed as the Chief Officer of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), according to a notification issued by the Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance.

The appointment, effective for a two-year term, was made under Section 24(1)(d) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2012 (amended 2015) and Rule 22 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Rules, 2019. The notification, signed by Deputy Secretary Afsana Bilkis, specifies that the position carries the rank of Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank and requires Shahinul Islam to sever ties with any other organizations before assuming his new role.

AFM Shahinul Islam began his career with Bangladesh Bank as an Assistant Director in 1993 and was promoted to Executive Director on March 2, 2022. He entered post-retirement leave (PRL) on December 31, 2023.

As Chief Officer of the BFIU, Shahinul Islam will lead the unit tasked with combating money laundering and ensuring financial security, bringing decades of experience in banking and financial regulation to the role.
