DHAKA, May 21, (V7N) – The government has decided to implement a long-term plan for sustainable and modern agricultural production, aiming to ensure safe and nutritious food for all by 2050.
Agriculture Secretary Dr. Mohammad Emdad Ullah Mian disclosed this information at a press briefing held today at the Bangladesh Foreign Service Academy, adding that this plan is expected to be finalized within the tenure of the interim government.
“The government has been working to make the agriculture sector as scientific and technology oriented,” he said, further stating that all services from different departments under the ministry would be integrated into a unique Management Information System (MIS).
The government is also set to introduce a mobile application named ‘Khamari,’ which will incorporate all agriculture-related information and bring every mouza (revenue village) in the country under a single database. He explained that farmers will be able to access all necessary information, from crop planting to harvesting, through this app.
Dr. Emdad said the government will work on a long-term plan to transform educated women and youth into agricultural entrepreneurs. He also mentioned efforts to enhance the efficiency of business professionals in agriculture-related non-government sectors.
“The production of crops is very good this year, especially the production of paddy and other crops are satisfactory,” the secretary noted. He added that the government is constructing modern cold storage facilities and preservation centers across the country to store perishable vegetables, such as potatoes and onions.
The secretary recalled that a devastating flood in 23 districts in August last year caused significant crop losses. However, he stated that farmers were able to recover their losses due to special incentives and supervision provided by the government.
He further highlighted that the government has maintained a normal supply of fertilizer nationwide, even after clearing substantial outstanding payments, attributing this success to correct steps and leadership by the government. As a result, there is currently no shortage of fertilizer in the country.
Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Mohammad Shafiqul Alam and Additional Secretary to the Agriculture Ministry Dr. Md. Mahmudur Rahman were present at the briefing.
