Dhaka, Aug 16 (V7N) — Several Indian hacker groups have reportedly launched coordinated cyberattacks on more than 100 Bangladeshi websites, including those belonging to the National Board of Revenue (NBR) and Dhaka WASA. The attacks coincided with India's Independence Day on August 15, as announced on the hackers’ Telegram channels.
According to their online posts, the hacker groups targeted websites across sectors such as government services, education, and private enterprise. Some of the groups also published partial data sets allegedly obtained from Bangladeshi companies and educational institutions as a sample of their exploits.
The cyberattack was not limited to Bangladesh. The hackers also claimed responsibility for attacks on websites in Pakistan and Malaysia, although no official confirmation from those countries has yet been made.
Cybersecurity analysts stated that the groups had been threatening such attacks for several days, but the Bangladeshi government did not appear to take preventive measures in time. This is not the first instance of such an incident. Indian hacker groups similarly launched a cyber offensive against Bangladeshi websites on August 15 last year after issuing public warnings.
Despite the scale of the attack and the apparent leak of sensitive data, there has been no official statement from Bangladeshi authorities. Cybersecurity experts continue to urge government agencies to improve digital infrastructure and defensive capabilities, particularly ahead of politically significant dates that often see spikes in hostile cyber activity.
An investigation is expected, but no formal response from national cybersecurity institutions has been announced as of Saturday afternoon.
