Khulna, Aug 16 (V7N) — A burglary involving approximately Tk 16 lakh took place at an Agrani Bank branch in Rupsha Upazila, Khulna, after unidentified individuals reportedly broke into the bank’s locker while the premises were closed for the weekend.
Police sources and local witnesses say the incident likely occurred between Thursday evening and late Friday night. The bank, as per routine, had shut down operations on Thursday afternoon. On Friday around 10:30 PM, a security guard discovered the lock on the bank’s collapsible gate had been cut. He informed nearby residents, who then alerted the local police.
Rupsha Police Station officers, led by Officer-in-Charge, (OC) Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman, responded promptly and began a preliminary investigation. According to the OC, the intruders broke into the building during the bank’s 30-hour closure window and forcibly accessed the locker storing cash.
“We’ve collected surveillance footage from the bank and neighboring buildings. These are currently being analyzed for leads,” said OC Mahfuzur Rahman.
A key security lapse was also noted: no guard had been assigned for the night shift, allowing the perpetrators to operate without resistance. As of now, no official statement has been issued by bank authorities, though an internal audit and review are reportedly underway.
Police have not ruled out the possibility of insider involvement and say the investigation is ongoing.
