Dhaka, Nov 14 (V7N) – The Election Commission (EC) is set to make significant changes in the appointment of presiding and polling officers ahead of the upcoming national elections, following concerns over the fairness of the last three polls.

Officials involved in previous elections have come under scrutiny, with reports indicating that about 1.3 million personnel played a major role in organizing allegedly one-sided and fraudulent polls. The government has requested the EC to review whether these officials should be excluded from election duties this time.

To ensure impartiality, new Deputy Commissioners (DCs) have been appointed in 29 districts, who will serve as returning officers. EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed stated that officials with minimal involvement in the last three elections will be removed, and new appointments and transfers will be carried out after considering political affiliations and other factors.

Traditionally, school teachers and bank officials serve as polling officers. Experts caution that indiscriminate disqualification could pose logistical challenges. Election expert Jasmine Tully said, “Corrupt officials should be removed, but duties must go to honest and skilled personnel, some of whom may have prior election experience. Maintaining impartiality is key to a level playing field.”

The EC’s reshuffle aims to restore public confidence and ensure transparency in the electoral process.
