Residents of Teknaf border areas in Cox's Bazar were filled with fear and panic as the sounds of gunfire and mortar shells echoed from the Myanmar side. Clashes and exchanges of fire between the Arakan Army and Myanmar's armed forces in Rakhine State led to intermittent gunfire and explosions near the Naf River border area of Whykong.
Starting from 10 pm on Sunday, residents reported hearing gunshots, causing widespread panic among the local population. The situation intensified as heavy gunfire and loud blasts continued throughout the night, spreading fear across various border areas in Whykong, including Kharangkhali, Noya Bazar, Mina Bazar, Kanjar Para, Jhimkhali, Unchiprang, and Lambabil.
Residents expressed deep concern as clashes between the Arakan Army and Myanmar's military resumed after a brief period of calm. The intensity of the explosions and gunfire heightened anxiety among the locals, with some describing it as if the ground was being torn apart.
In response to the escalating situation, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Coast Guard have increased patrols along the 54-km border stretch from Whykong to Shahpori Island, surrounded by the Naf River. The BGB reiterated its commitment to preventing border infiltration and assured readiness to address any challenges.
The clashes in Myanmar's Mongdaw and Buthidaung areas have led to heightened vigilance and preparedness among security forces along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border, underscoring the need for continued monitoring and coordination to ensure the safety and security of border areas and residents.
