Madaripur, July 26 (V7N)- In a two-day spree of violence in Madaripur, the destruction has amounted to a staggering 40 crore taka, according to a report by the district administration's investigative committee. The confirmation came from Additional District Magistrate Md. Nazmul Islam following the receipt of the committee's report.

On Wednesday (July 23) afternoon, Additional District Magistrate Md. Nazmul Islam reported that a group of vandals infiltrated a student protest demanding quota reforms last Thursday (July 20) and Friday (July 21) The vandals unleashed extensive havoc, targeting various locations including the District Commissioner’s office, Awami League office, traffic police boxes, bus counters, and the Liberation War Museum, causing severe damage.

Fires were set at several locations, including fuel stations, the city’s bus depot, police outposts, and the municipal Liberation War Community Center. At least 32 luxury buses were destroyed. Following the destruction, the district administration established a three-member investigation committee on Saturday. The committee, led by Executive Engineer Shahriar Rahman from the Public Works Department, also includes Executive Engineer Badal Chandra Kirtan from LGED and Assistant Director Md. Nur Hossain from BRTA. The committee members visited the site, spoke with the affected individuals, and submitted their damage assessment report to the district administration on Tuesday night.

The violence erupted during clashes among student activists, police, and student league members over the quota reform issue, leading to widespread destruction. Two individuals, Roman Bepari and Tauhid Sannyamat, lost their lives in the turmoil. Additionally, a student drowned while fleeing from the police, and over fifty police officers were injured, with more than a hundred individuals sustaining injuries.

Police have filed four separate cases related to the incidents, naming over 200 people and including 1,500 to 2,000 unidentified suspects. So far, 82 individuals have been arrested. After two days of unrest, normalcy has begun to return to Madaripur, with security checks and patrols established at key locations, and the army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), police, and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel are actively deployed.
