Dhaka, July 30— Biplab Kumar Sarkar, Joint Commissioner of Operations at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), has issued a stern warning against police officers involved in "arrest trade." Speaking to reporters at the DMP headquarters, Sarkar emphasized that if any evidence of such misconduct is found, maximum legal action will be taken against those responsible.

Addressing concerns about the alleged practice of "arrest trade" — where arrests are made for personal or financial gain — Sarkar acknowledged that it is a long-standing issue. He assured that since the DMP Commissioner ordered block raids, measures have been taken to alert all officers about this malpractice. "If any such complaint is received, then maximum legal action will be taken against the responsible policemen immediately," he stated.

In response to inquiries about police firing on unarmed civilians, Sarkar stressed the importance of context. "Every incident must be judged beforehand," he said, adding that each case would be reviewed thoroughly to ensure a fair investigation and that the reasons for any use of force would be scrutinized.

Sarkar also addressed concerns regarding the impartiality of police investigations, asserting that the DMP does not consider political affiliations when handling cases. "When a common man files a complaint, there is no scope for police intervention based on party affiliations or opinions," he explained. "The case will be properly investigated, and appropriate legal action will be taken against whoever is found guilty."

Regarding reports of police arresting innocent students during block raids, Sarkar clarified that there is no mandate to target ordinary citizens. He assured that senior officers are deployed during these operations to prevent any violations of the law and to ensure that innocent people are not harassed. However, he also stressed that anyone found guilty of criminal activities would not be exempt from legal consequences.

"Ordinary students are equal to our children," Sarkar said, highlighting the police's sensitivity towards young people. He emphasized that the police's primary targets are those involved in vandalism and violence, including members of the Jamaat-Shibir group and BNP terrorists. The DMP is using video and CCTV footage to identify and apprehend these individuals.

Sarkar concluded by stating that block raids and targeted operations would continue in various areas of the capital to maintain law and order.
