Cumilla, Aug 24 (V7N) - The flood situation in Cumilla district has worsened dramatically over the past 24 hours, with new areas succumbing to rising waters. As of Saturday, around seven lakh people find themselves stranded as the Gumti River's water level surged 80 cm above the danger mark.

Relief efforts are being hampered by the extensive flooding, which has submerged roads and left volunteers struggling to distribute essential supplies. The lack of accessible boats has made reaching affected areas even more challenging.

In response to the crisis, the local administration has set up 726 shelter centres, where approximately 50,000 displaced individuals have sought refuge. To support these efforts, the authorities have allocated 340 metric tonnes of rice and Tk 15 lakh in cash assistance. Additionally, 225 medical teams are on standby, prepared to offer medical care to those in need.

The situation remains dire as the district grapples with the effects of the flooding, and ongoing relief efforts aim to provide some respite to the affected population.
