Dhaka, June 24 (V7N) — Global technology giant Google has officially launched its digital payment service, Google Wallet (commonly known as Google Pay), for the first time in Bangladesh. The service was inaugurated by Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur at a ceremony held at a hotel in Dhaka on Tuesday (June 24) morning.
City Bank PLC has introduced this digital transaction service in collaboration with Google, Mastercard, and Visa. With this launch, City Bank customers can now link their Mastercard or Visa credit and debit cards to Google Wallet, enabling fast and secure contactless payments using Google Pay.
Customers can now make transactions by simply tapping their Android smartphones on any NFC-enabled POS terminals both domestically and internationally. The payment service uses advanced encryption technology to ensure the safety of customer data, transforming smartphones into digital wallets and reducing the need for carrying physical cards.
From booking airline tickets to shopping and purchasing cinema tickets, a wide range of payments can now be completed through mobile phones.
Speaking at the event, the Bangladesh Bank Governor emphasized the importance of digital financial inclusion and said that such services will enhance convenience and security in the country's evolving digital economy.
Industry experts believe that the launch of Google Wallet will play a significant role in accelerating the adoption of cashless transactions in Bangladesh.
