Feni June 11,(V7N)- Egg prices have suddenly increased in wholesale and retail markets across the country, including the capital. In the wholesale markets of Feni, the price of a dozen eggs has increased by 10 taka in two days. The rate of price increase in the retail market is even higher, causing difficulties for people with limited incomes. In addition to eggs, the prices of fish, meat, potatoes, and other vegetables have also increased in the market.

When asked about the reason for the sudden increase in the price of eggs, Md Farooq, an egg trader and president of the market committee at Feni Sultan Mahmud Town Hawkers Market, said that until last Thursday, the price of eggs in the market was low. The price has suddenly increased by Tk 10  per dozen since Friday. According to him, prices have risen due to a supply shortage. However, to understand the real reason for the price increase, one should consult egg production companies.

Other traders in the market mentioned that earlier, each vehicle used to carry 80,000 to 90,000 eggs. Now, the number has reduced to 40,000 to 50,000 eggs per vehicle. Those who used to receive two vehicles' worth of eggs are now only receiving one. This has created a supply crisis compared to the demand. Farmers have sold older chickens, leading to decreased egg production. Many firms have closed down, allowing corporate institutions to control the prices at their discretion.

When asked when the price of eggs might decrease again, the egg sellers said it is impossible to predict. The price depends on the fluctuations in the supply of raw materials. If the supply increases, the price will decrease, and if the supply decreases, the price will increase. Sellers are attributing the sudden price hike to the drop in egg production and supply shortage. However, buyers feel that a manipulative syndicate of sellers is responsible for increasing the price of eggs at will.

On Monday (June 10), a visit to the wholesale and retail egg market in Feni revealed that a dozen red chicken eggs are currently being sold at Tk 152, with individual eggs priced between Tk 52 and 54. A dozen white chicken eggs are being sold at Tk 150, with individual eggs priced at Tk 52. Last Thursday, red eggs were sold at Tk 145 per dozen in the Feni market, while white eggs were sold at Tk 140 per dozen. Egg prices are higher in regional local markets compared to the main market, with reports indicating that eggs are being sold for up to Tk 170 per dozen in some places.

Since Friday, eggs have been sold at higher prices in the market, according to wholesalers and retailers. They claim that reduced egg production has led to insufficient supply in the market, causing the price increase.
