Ashulia, Oct 01 (V7N) – A severe traffic jam lasting over 30 hours has crippled the industrial area of Ashulia , Savar, after garment workers from several factories under the Bards Group staged a road blockade demanding overdue salaries and bonuses. The protest caused a significant standstill on key highways, leaving thousands of commuters stranded.
The workers blocked the Nabinagar-Chandra road , creating a 26-kilometer traffic jam across the Dhaka-Aricha and Tangail highways . As of Tuesday afternoon, congestion stretched over 7 kilometers from Nabinagar to Sreepur , while further gridlock was observed:
- 8 kilometers from Nabinagar to Savar C&B on the Dhaka-Aricha highway .
- 3 kilometers from Baishmail to Nabinagar .
- 8 kilometers from Bypile to Jamgra and Jirabo areas.
The demonstration, which began more than 24 hours ago, paralyzed traffic in and around Ashulia , affecting both pedestrians and vehicles . Commuters traveling long distances have reported hours of delay, with some stuck in the same spot since early morning. A bus driver shared that he had been stationary at Nabinagar since 1 PM , while Imran , a passenger on a Paturia-bound bus, mentioned sitting idle for over an hour near Nabinagar.
Ayub Ali , in charge of Savar Highway Police , confirmed the extent of the traffic jam, attributing it to the workers' prolonged blockade. Despite efforts by law enforcement to clear the roads, traffic remains heavily congested due to the demonstration.
The protest, primarily driven by workers' demands for unpaid salaries and bonuses, has caused a complete halt in transportation in the surrounding areas, leaving travelers and goods transporters stuck for hours on end. Savar Highway Police are continuing their efforts to bring the situation under control, but the congestion persists, affecting thousands of people commuting through these major routes.
This blockade has added further disruption to an already strained industrial region, as Ashulia remains a vital hub for garment factories and trade.
