Dhaka, Nov 24 (V7N) — Protests erupted at Science Lab, Dhanmondi, Basila, and Shahbagh in Mohammadpur on Sunday morning as drivers of battery-powered auto-rickshaws demanded the government allow these vehicles to operate on city roads. Demonstrators chanted slogans and blocked roads, causing significant traffic disruptions and forcing commuters to walk to their destinations.

The protests stem from a recent High Court ruling issued on November 19, which ordered the cessation of battery-powered auto-rickshaw operations within three days. The court also questioned the legal authority behind the state’s inaction in stopping these vehicles. While the state has decided to appeal the decision, drivers are continuing to demand the lifting of the ban.

Drivers have been holding protests for several days, arguing that the ban will leave them without livelihoods. They are urging the authorities to reconsider the decision, citing the affordability and accessibility of battery-powered auto-rickshaws for both drivers and passengers.

The ongoing demonstrations have created significant challenges for residents, with traffic disruptions in key areas of the city. The authorities are yet to respond to the drivers' demands, and the situation remains tense.
