Gazipur, May 05 (V7N) – At least 54 people have been arrested in connection with the attack on the vehicle of National Citizens Party (NCP) Southern Chief Coordinator Hasnat Abdullah on the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway, police confirmed Monday morning.
The arrests were made during a late-night operation on Sunday (May 4) by the Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP). However, no formal arrests were recorded as of Monday morning.
GMP Additional Deputy Police Commissioner Rabiul Islam said the identities of two detainees have been confirmed. They are Md. Nizam Uddin, a member of the Gazipur Metropolitan Jubo League, and Masum Ahmed Dipu, President of the Sheikh Russell Shishu Kishore Parishad under Kashimpur Police Station.
The attack took place on Sunday evening in the Chandana Chowrasta area of Gazipur. Hasnat Abdullah sustained injuries when a group of 10–12 miscreants allegedly ambushed his vehicle, smashing the windows and causing bleeding injuries to his hands.
The incident came to light through Facebook posts by NCP leaders Abdul Hannan Masud and Sarjis Alam, the party’s Northern Chief Coordinator. In his post, Sarjis wrote: "10-12 terrorists attacked Hasnat's car in Gazipur. The car's glass is broken, his hands are bloody. Those around him should protect Hasnat, I am giving the location in the comments."
Authorities are currently investigating the motive behind the attack and are questioning the detainees for further leads.
