Dhaka, Oct 12 (V7N) – Police clashed with MPO-affiliated teachers during a protest in front of the National Press Club on Sunday (October 12), firing tear gas shells to disperse the demonstrators. The teachers had been blocking the road as part of a sit-in program organized by the Nationalization Alliance demanding four key measures, including a 20 percent increase in house rent.
Teachers from across the country joined the protest, rejecting a previous government notification of a 500-taka increase in house rent for MPO-affiliated teachers and staff in private educational institutions.
According to reports, the Ministry of Education has sent a new proposal to the Ministry of Finance seeking a 20 percent increase in house rent, an increase in medical allowances, and a 75 percent Eid bonus for employees.
Despite this, the teachers announced that the sit-in will continue until the government issues the notification. They further stated that classes would be boycotted if their demands are not met.
