Dhaka, Jan 05 (V7N) — The Meteorological Department has forecast a sharp drop in temperatures across Bangladesh in the coming days, with a severe cold wave expected by the end of January. From January 9 to 14, temperatures in northern districts such as Panchagarh, Chuadanga, and Ishwardi could plummet to 5–7 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Dhaka is expected to experience milder conditions, with temperatures ranging between 11 and 16 degrees Celsius until mid-January.
Meteorologist Dr. Abdul Kalam Mallick stated that the country may experience two to three mild and moderate cold waves this month, with a severe cold wave particularly affecting Panchagarh towards the month's end. He also noted that while the day temperatures might rise slightly by 1–2 degrees in the next 24 hours, the cold sensation will persist.
The capital witnessed some relief on Saturday as the sun appeared after three days of dense fog, but the Meteorological Office warns that the fog may return soon, especially during the night and early morning hours. This could lead to further drops in day and night temperatures.
The intensifying winter has led to a surge in cold-related illnesses, particularly diarrhea among children. The ICDDRB Hospital in Dhaka has reported an average of 675 pediatric cases daily. Doctors are urging parents to ensure children are dressed warmly to prevent further complications.
Residents, especially in northern districts, are advised to prepare for the extreme cold by wearing adequate warm clothing and staying indoors during peak cold hours.
Travelers should exercise caution due to dense fog, which could affect visibility on roads.
Families are encouraged to ensure children and elderly individuals are protected from the cold to avoid health issues.
The Meteorological Department has also warned of increased fog in the next three days, which could impact daily life and transportation across the country.
