Rajshahi, Feb 16 (V7N) – Despite environmental laws, Awami League leaders in Mohanpur, Rajshahi, are burning wood in brick kilns, cutting down trees from social forestry and endangering the ecosystem. Locals report that these kilns are producing low-quality bricks, which are being used in both private and government development projects.
Mohanpur Upazila has 11 brick kilns, with some following environmental regulations. However, politically backed owners continue burning wood to cut costs.
A.G.I. Bricks, owned by Azizul Islam, former Ward No. 8 Awami League president of Raighati Union, is using illegally sourced wood for fuel. He justifies it, saying, "Wood is cheaper than coal."
Tata Bricks, run by Abdul Quddus of Basantakedar village, is also using large tree logs. A known political influencer, he claims, "I have already paid fines, but coal remains unaffordable." Workers at his kiln revealed that wood is stockpiled, and a sawmill operates inside the premises.
According to Section 6 of the 2013 Brick Kiln Act, using wood in kilns is punishable by three years in prison, a Tk 3 lakh fine, or both.
Kabir Hossain, Assistant Director of Rajshahi Divisional Environment Department, stated, “We have conducted a drive in Mohanpur. If violations continue, action will be taken.”
Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner Afia Akhtar warned, "Anyone breaking the law will face legal action."
