Yangon, Mar 29 (V7N) – The death toll from the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday, March 28, has now surpassed 1,000, with 1,102 people confirmed dead and 2,376 injured, according to BBC reports. The earthquake's epicenter was located near the northwestern city of Sagaing, approximately 16 kilometers from the city and 100 kilometers north of Naypyidaw, the capital.

Rescue operations have been ongoing since the earthquake hit at 12:20 p.m. local time on Friday, with emergency teams recovering bodies and injured individuals from the rubble of buildings in various cities and villages. Naypyidaw, Mandalay, and Sagaing are among the worst-hit areas. As of now, at least 30 people are still missing.

The tremors from the earthquake were felt in neighboring countries, including Thailand, China, India, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Bangladesh. Thailand has reported the most significant damage, particularly in the capital Bangkok, where several high-rise buildings collapsed. As of the latest reports, 10 bodies have been recovered in Thailand, all victims of building collapses caused by the earthquake.

Efforts continue to locate the missing and provide assistance to the affected populations in all impacted countries.
