Bandarban, Jul 11 (V7N) — Continuous heavy rainfall and landslides have severely disrupted normal life across the three hill districts and Cox's Bazar, leaving hundreds of thousands of people stranded and facing acute shortages of food and clean drinking water.
In Bandarban, overflowing waters from the Sangu, Matamuhuri and Bankkhali rivers have inundated most low-lying areas. Thousands of families remain marooned, while road communication with Chattogram has been suspended. The district administration, Bangladesh Army and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) are distributing relief supplies in affected areas, although residents in several remote localities have yet to receive assistance.
In Rangamati, low-lying areas of Baghaichhari, Longadu, Barkal and Bilaichhari remain submerged following days of continuous rainfall and landslides. Road communication with Dhaka and Chattogram through Khagrachari and Dighinala has been cut off after landslides blocked nearly three kilometres of roadway in Baghaichhari.
Conditions in Khagrachari have begun to improve as rainfall has eased intermittently. Water from the Chengi River and nearby canals has receded from many low-lying areas, allowing road traffic to resume. However, thousands of families in Chhoto Merung Union remain affected by floodwaters.
In Cox's Bazar, large parts of Chakaria, Pekua, Ramu and other upazilas remain flooded despite a gradual improvement in conditions. Extensive areas continue to suffer from waterlogging and landslide damage. Although floodwaters have started to recede, many residents are facing severe shortages of food and safe drinking water.
Local authorities have distributed relief materials in several affected areas, but residents say the assistance remains insufficient to meet the growing humanitarian needs.
Emergency response teams continue to monitor the situation as authorities urge people living in vulnerable areas to remain cautious amid the risk of further rainfall and landslides.
