The Sundarbans played a crucial role in protecting the Khulna region from severe damage by reducing wind speeds as Cyclone Remal struck the district of Satkhira after making landfall in the coastal areas of Bangladesh and India late on Sunday.
Local journalist Asaduzzaman Asad reported from Burigoalini in Satkhira on Sunday night, noting that although many trees were uprooted and fish enclosures were swept away by tidal surges, the Sundarbans once again acted as a vital shield.
In Munjitpur, resident Aminur Rahman Alam urged authorities to secure embankments to prevent river water from flooding local areas.
Oliur Rahman from Kaliganj expressed his gratitude, saying, "Praise be to God, the Sundarbans protected the Satkhira coast once again."
Sultan Shahjahan from Shyamnagar reported that many trees had fallen, blocking roads. The area continued to experience drizzle, gusty winds, and raging rivers, with potential cracks in embankments.
Zulfikar Ali from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department in Satkhira stated that the cyclone crossed the district, with maximum wind speeds reaching 72 km/h at 1 am and 66 mm of rainfall recorded from the evening until 3 pm.
Superintendent of Police Matiur Rahman Siddiqui mentioned that several trees had fallen on the Munshiganj-Shyamnagar road near the Sundarbans, disrupting traffic. Police, led by the officer-in-charge of Shyamnagar police station, cleared the road by cutting the trees with axes.
