Sylhet, June 25 (V7N)- The Meteorological Department has forecasted heavy rainfall again in Sylhet. Although the flood situation in Sylhet is continuously improving, there are concerns that the flood situation might deteriorate again due to 51 millimeters of rainfall in Sylhet on Tuesday morning (June 25). The water levels of the Surma and Kushiyara rivers were still flowing above the danger level at three points on Monday.

Meanwhile, as the flood situation improves, people are leaving the shelters and returning home. As the water recedes, the damage caused by the flood is becoming visible. Due to the receding water in Sylhet city and other places, a foul smell is spreading, and there is a severe shortage of clean water. Even though the floodwater is receding, the suffering continues in the flooded areas.

It has been reported that due to the lack of rain in the past two days, the water levels of Sylhet’s rivers had started to decrease, albeit very slowly. According to the Sylhet Water Development Board (WDB), the water was still above the danger level at four points in the Surma and Kushiyara rivers until 6 PM on Monday.

The Sylhet WDB stated that on Monday, the water level of the Surma river at the Kanaighat point was 19 centimeters above the danger level, where the danger level is 12.75 centimeters. Meanwhile, the water levels of the Kushiyara river at the Amalshid, Fenchuganj, and Sherpur points were also above the danger level. At the Amalshid point, the water was flowing 33 centimeters above the danger level. At the Fenchuganj point, the water was flowing 98 centimeters above the danger level, and at the Sherpur point, the water was flowing 6 centimeters above the danger level.

Additionally, due to the rain, the water levels have increased in several areas of South Surma, Fenchuganj, and Balaganj in Sylhet. However, the water level has decreased in the Surma river basin, although the decrease is very slow. Dipak Ranjan Das, the executive engineer of Sylhet WDB, stated that the low-lying areas including the haors in Sylhet are still filled with water. On the other hand, the water from the Juri and Manu rivers in Moulvibazar is joining the Kushiyara river in Sylhet, causing the water to recede slowly. Due to the rain after 2 AM on Monday, the water levels have risen in some areas. However, the situation will improve if the amount of rain decreases.

Meanwhile, according to the district administration and the meteorological department, there is a possibility of very heavy rainfall in Sylhet from June 28, which could worsen the flood situation again. Therefore, the Sylhet district administration has advised being prepared in advance. The Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet, Sheikh Russell Hasan, stated that nearly 850,000 people in the district are still waterlogged, with 13,154 people in shelters.

Shah Md. Sajib Hossain, Assistant Meteorologist of the Sylhet Meteorological Office, mentioned that although there was no rain in Sylhet for the past two days, it started raining again from Monday night. There is a forecast for normal rain on Tuesday and Wednesday, and heavy rain is expected from Thursday.
