Dhaka, Nov 27 (V7N) – The High Court has directed the government to provide details of its intended actions regarding the "International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon) issue" by tomorrow, 28 November.
The directive followed a petition filed with the HC bench of Justice Farah Mahbub, seeking a ban on Iskcon's activities. The petitioner referenced a newspaper article highlighting recent unrest tied to the arrest of former Iskcon Bangladesh leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari.
In response, the court summoned the attorney general to present the state’s perspective. During the hearing, the attorney general expressed sorrow over the situation, stating, "Like the people across the country, my heart is bleeding." However, he urged the court to refrain from making any immediate decisions, assuring that the government had already begun taking necessary measures.
Background of the Case
On Tuesday, 26 November, at approximately 11 am, former Iskcon Bangladesh leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari appeared before the Chattogram 6th Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, presided over by Kazi Shariful Islam. His lawyers sought bail, which was denied, resulting in an order to send him to jail.
Following the court's decision, a large group, reportedly supporters of Chinmoy Krishna Das, obstructed the prison van transporting him, delaying its journey for over two hours. Law enforcement ultimately dispersed the protesters using sound grenades and secured Chinmoy’s transfer to jail.
During the protest, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif sustained severe injuries near Rangam Cinema Hall, opposite the court’s main entrance. He was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead by doctors.
The High Court's directive emphasizes the urgency of addressing the unfolding situation, urging the government to outline its position and planned actions promptly.
