New York, Sept 10 (V7N) - The United Nations has called for stronger global efforts to protect schools, students and teachers from attacks, warning that exercising the fundamental right to education is becoming increasingly dangerous in conflict-affected areas.
In a message marking the International Day to Protect Education from Attack on Sept. 9, the United Nations said education is both a fundamental human right and a pathway to a better future for every child and young person.
According to the message, more than 8,500 attacks worldwide targeted schools, students and teachers over the past two years, resulting in deadly violence, abductions and lasting trauma.
The UN stressed that all states have an obligation to guarantee every child’s right to education while ensuring the safety of schools and other places of learning.
It also called on all parties to conflicts to stop and prevent attacks on schools and educational institutions, comply with their obligations under international law and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
The UN urged countries to invest in education for every child, fully endorse and implement the Safe Schools Declaration and support the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack.
It further called for joint efforts to prepare and protect education systems both in person and online, with particular attention to girls and children living in vulnerable circumstances.
The message also emphasized the need to safely reintegrate children and young people associated with armed forces and groups into schools and their communities.
The United Nations said it provides a range of tools to help countries strengthen these efforts, including practical guidance and policy support through UNESCO.
“Together, let’s keep children safe as they learn and build the peaceful futures they deserve,” the UN said.
