Dhaka, Dec 08 (V7N) — The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld the High Court's decision to quash five labor law-related cases against Nobel laureate economist and former chief advisor of the interim government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

The three-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Senior Justice Md. Ashfaqul Islam, issued the order on Sunday, following a hearing on the state’s leave to appeal against the High Court verdict.

On October 24, the High Court had ruled in favor of Dr. Yunus, quashing the proceedings in five cases filed against him under the Labor Act. These cases were initially filed in 2019 during his tenure as chairman of Grameen Telecommunication. Additionally, a defamation case had been lodged against him in 2010.

The state's appeal against the High Court's decision was heard by Additional Attorney General Anik R. Haque, while Dr. Yunus was represented by senior lawyer Mustafizur Rahman Khan. The Appellate Division’s ruling upheld the High Court's findings, bringing closure to these long-standing legal battles.

The High Court’s original ruling came after Dr. Yunus petitioned to quash the cases, prompting the court to issue a rule in 2011 and 2019 questioning the legality of the proceedings. With today's decision, the Appellate Division has confirmed the High Court's judgment, providing significant legal relief to the globally renowned economist.
