Dhaka, Apr 29 (V7N)- The High Court has quashed the decision to establish a sacrificial animal market in the Meradia area under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), effectively barring the market from being set up this year.
The order was issued on Tuesday by a High Court bench comprising Justice Zeenat Ara Haque and Justice Ainun Nahar Siddiqui after hearing a writ petition filed by residents of the Meradia area.
DSCC had previously designated Meradia as one of the locations for Qurbani cattle markets this year. However, locals filed a writ petition challenging the decision, arguing that setting up a cattle market in a residential area would disrupt public movement and create significant inconvenience for residents.
During the hearing, the petitioner’s lawyer, Barrister Khurram Shah Murad, stated that there is no legal provision for establishing a cattle market within a residential neighborhood. Taking these concerns into account, the court canceled the DSCC notification.
With this verdict, authorities will be required to find an alternative location for the market ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha festivities.
